Adding Music to Yoga Class
I've taken yoga classes where there is no music. In fact, most classes I've taken have been very quiet with just the instructor's voice to follow. I can see the benefit to this, I guess. The point is that nothing is distracting your thoughts, you're finding calmness in your breathing and concentrating only on how your body feels. I play music when I teach, though. I like this because it DOES distract you from some of the more uncomfortable postures when we're trying to hold them for a long time. The music also adds a nice tempo to the workout when we're flowing from one position to the next. It doesn't keep you from being "in tune" (excuse the pun) with your body, I think it just adds an element of fun to the class.

While I have no experience with Yoga class, I agree with you. Actually, I don't even like Yoga, but I know what you mean about adding music to class. Certain classes would really benefit from having something in the background like music for all the reasons you mentioned. For example, I have aquatics now, and we had music playing for 2 days so far out of the entire semester. I don't know why we haven't had it more but I liked it a lot. It made the class more enjoyable somehow.
ReplyDeleteI must admit, I love to do yoga. It is relaxing anf un and very tough and gives me a challenge. I usually get started and next thing i know I am sweating pretty hard. It is a really good workout for me. The only reason I do not take classes is because I feel a little weird holding the poses and such. DO a lot of guys take yoga classes? I gotta start getting back into it!
ReplyDeleteI have a few guys who take my class. There are a lot of different yoga "practices" or styles so you might really like one style but not another. Power Vinyasa is a "flowing" style. We don't hold the poses very long but they're really challenging postures and we rarely stop moving! Most people think of Hatha yoga when they think of yoga. This the the more stationary, meditative, purely stretching based class. So, to answer your question YES a lot of guys take my yoga class! :)
