Yoga Misconceptions

I have to admit that before I took my firs Power Yoga class I thought it was too soft, boring, slow and meditative.  I was rehabbing a knee injury after having just run a marathon (so keep in mind I was in peak condition).  Someone suggested I take the Power Yoga class as a last resort.  I tried it because it was better than doing nothing at all but completely expected to be bored out of my mind!  I made it about half way through my first class before I started shaking and bailing out of poses!  I walked out of class without any knee pain at all and have been hooked on it ever since.  So I always laugh a little inside when people tell me they won't do yoga because it's too slow or because they're not flexible.  I think most people think of yoga as a mat-based relaxing, meditative activity.

  1. I am curious what your opinion on Zumba is. I took my first class this past weekend and I loved it. It is a great workout buuuutttt.....It is FUN! I loved moving my hips to the rhythmic sounds of latin dance and also 'poppin' my collar :) to the hip hop music. I would enjoy leading a class someday...what do you think about that? Do I need to get certified at all? How do I apply for a job? How do I get better at it? lol Thanks!

  2. I love Zumba too! It's definitely a lot of fun! I think it's a good workout if the instructor keeps the class moving and uses a continuous playlist. Some instructors pause too long in between songs which I feel lessens the workout intensity. You have to get certified to teach Zumba but it's only a one day workout and EVERYONE passes the workshop. In a way I guess that's good but it concerns me that there isn't more required of Zumba instructors. The instructors I know are very knowledgable but I'm sure somewhere there are instructors that don't know the first thing about heart rate, risk factors, etc. You should definitely get certified! It would make you really marketable! To get better? Just keep doing it!:)
